Celts and Iberians Review

Before the class tomorrow, here is a quick review of the Celts and Iberians, who we were learning about before we moved on to the ancient civilisations.

The Celts and Iberians were two peoples that lived on the Iberian Peninsula before the arrival of the Phoenicians and Greeks. They stayed on the peninsula until the Roman Conquest of Hispania, when they became part of the Roman Empire.
The Iberians lived in the East and South of the Iberian Peninsula, and the Celts lived in the West, North, and centre.

Both the Celts and the Iberians lived in tribes, with a chief as their leader. They built their settlements, called forts, with walls for protection. And both peoples were farmers, not hunter-gatherers like people in pre-history. However, there were some differences, as you know.

The Celts built their houses in a circular shape, while the Iberians built square buildings. The Iberians had money, and were traders, but the Celts did not use money. The Iberians had a way of writing, and the Celts didn't use writing. The Iberians had warriors, but they were more known for being craftsmen, while the Celts were very good warriors. This was partly because the Iberians used bronze for their tools and weapons, but the Celts used bronze and also iron, a stronger metal.

Carthaginians and Romans

The Carthaginians were a very important civilisation on the Mediterranean in the Ancient Age. They were from the city of Carthage on the coast of North Africa, and they established trading routes and colonies around the Mediterranean Sea. Carthage was originally a Phoenician colony, which quickly became more powerful than the original city states of the Phoenicians, and they took control of most of their other colonies, and of areas under Greek influence, as both earlier civilisations were involved in wars.
The Carthaginians were famous traders, like the Phoenicians, and were excellent artisans as well. They were also very good warriors, and had the strongest navy in the Mediterranean.
As the biggest power in the Mediterranean, the Carthaginians came into conflict with the growing Roman Republic. Rome won a long war with Carthage and took control of their islands in the Mediterranean. Carthage already controlled some of the Iberian Peninsula’s coast, but after the first Punic War they conquered most of the peninsula. Eventually, the general Hannibal Barca attacked a city under Roman protection, Saguntum. After 8 months Saguntum surrendered and Hannibal marched north. The Romans sent an army to help Saguntum but Hannibal marched over the Alps to go around them and invade Italy. Hannibal won many victories in Italy, but his Brother Hasdrubal lost to Scipio Africanus and Hannibal had to leave Italy to defend Carthage. He was finally defeated by Scipio Africanus in North Africa.
After this Second Punic War, the Roman Republic controlled most of the Iberian Peninsula. However it took almost two hundred more years for them to finally conquer the Celtic tribes in the northwest. The most important event in this very long war was at Numantia, a Celtic town that was captured by Scipio Aemilianus. However the Celts burned the town down before the Romans took it.
When the Romans finished the conquest of Hispania, the Republic had ended and Rome was an empire ruled by Augustus, the nephew of Julius Caesar. Caesar was a great Roman general who conquered Gaul (France) for Rome, but he took power away from the senate and started a civil war that ended with the end of the Republic.
Rome eventually controlled most of Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. They were able to do this because of their strong military and system of roads that let them travel quickly across their empire.

Roman society was very similar to Greek society, but Romans thought military success was very important, and it was almost impossible to reach political success without military victories.
The Emperor Trajan, who was considered the best of all Roman Emperors and a very successful soldier was born in Hispania. He led the empire to its maximum size, by conquering a lot of land in Asia.

The next emperor, Hadrian, was his cousin, and was also from Hispania. Hadrian is most famous for building a wall in Britain, between England and Scotland to keep the celts in Scotland out of Roman Britain.

Phoenicians and Greeks

The Phoenicians were a civilisation from the coast of the Levant, in the Near East. They came from city-states, such as Tyre, Sidon, and Biblos.

The Phoenicians had many jobs: metal workers and glass-makers for example. But they were best known for being navigators and traders. They sailed across the Mediterranean Sea and traded with many people. They founded colonies across North Africa and on the Iberian Peninsula.
On the Iberian Peninsula, the Phoenicians founded Gadir (today: Cadiz) and Malaka (today: Málaga).
The Phoenicians had their own alphabet, which eventually became our alphabet.

The Greeks game from Greece, around the Aegean Sea. Like the Phoenicians, they came from city states, like Athens, Sparta and Korinth.

The Greeks are most famous for being thinkers and politicians. Athens is where democracy was invented. But the Greeks were also great warriors, writers, athletes, sculptors, and architects.
They took the Phoenicians’ idea and started to sail around the Mediterranean Sea to trade and found colonies, such as Rhodes (today: Rosas). The Greeks had their own currency and they traded with the Phoenicians. Their art and society were very important and influenced other cultures such as the Romans.

Welcome to the Ancient Age

Welcome to our Ancient Age blog. Here we will post all of the information that we learn about the Phoenician, Ancient Greek, Carthaginian, and Ancient Roman civilisations.
Here is a silly video about all of history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzAOhyOtfqc Watch from 5:30 to 9:00 for the Ancient Age, and focus on the Mediterranean. But the rest is fun too!
Here is another video to watch about the ancient age: https://youtu.be/k544jQEleQM
We will learn lots about the civilisations that came to the Iberian Peninsula in this period (no Ancient Egyptians though, sorry! 😞) in the next few weeks.
You can also use different resources to research your civilisation. For example, the BBC History website: https://www.historyextra.com/ or Simple English Wikipedia (https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page).
But the best one is Kiddle (https://www.kiddle.co/)
